OSCAR Case Scenario

Smokey the Bear is thinking about changing careers. He likes many things about his current job, such as the working conditions (working outdoors), working alone, and being able to make his own decisions. But he would like to see if there are other occupations that would fit his work values and preferences. He really isn't interested in a job that would provide a chance for advancement, but he does want steady employment.

After reading the HELP information about the choices in OSCAR, Smokey decides that the quickest way to find occupations that match his work values and preferences is to select the "Quick Trip" option, then select the "Search by Work Values" button.

Smokey selects <Quick Trip>, then the <Search by Work Values> button and immediately sees the introductory screen for the on-line assessment tool, the Work Importance Locator. Smokey reads each of the instruction screens.

Then he individually reads the twenty work value cards, thinking about how important it would be for him to be in a workplace like the one described on the card. After reading each card he clicks on <Next Card> until he has read all 20 cards.
Reading the Cards
Next, he reads the instructions on each of the Example screens. He also sees that OSCAR provides a practice screen for dragging the cards, so he clicks on the <How to Drag Cards> button before moving on to the actual card sort. (He hasn't had much experience with computers in his current job, so he needs to practice this a little!).
How to Drag the Cards
Smokey practices placing the cards in each of the columns and swapping from column to column. Mastering that, he exits the practice screen by clicking on <OK>, then selects the <Begin Sort> button.

He begins placing the work value cards in Columns 5 through 1 according to which are most important and which are least important to him. Completing the placement portion of the assessment, Smokey reviews his card placement before selecting <Continue>.

When he selects <Continue>, Smokey sees the Score Report that tells him his highest work value is Working Conditions and Independence is his second highest work value. When he clicks on the <Work Values Report> button, he is able to view or print a report that describes his work value preferences. It also lists the occupations at varying education and training levels that match his work value preferences.

When he clicks on the <Continue> button, he is able to look at all the occupations related to his work values. He scrolls through the list, looking at the education and training level of some of the occupations by clicking on the <E/T> button. He finally selects Forest Fire Inspectors and Prevention Specialists to look at the occupation in more detail. He clicks on the <Continue> button to proceed.

After reading the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics of the job, he decides that he wants to print a narrative report of it.
Criterion Match Screen
When he selects <Print>, and the <Narrative Profile> option, he clicks on the <View/Print the selected report> button to print a report of the information. When he is finished printing, he clicks on <OK>, then selects the <Return to Menu> button. Print Matching Reports Screen
